It is one of the forts built in the late 19th century for the defence of the capital. However, during WWII it hosted several executions of opponents, becoming a symbol of the Roman Resistance.

Built between 1877 and 1883 on an area of about eleven hectares, it was one of the 15 forts of the first defence belt of Rome. Designed as an artillery emplacement, it was later converted into barracks and a military depot.

During the fascist period, it was used as a place to execute the death sentences of the Tribunale speciale per la difesa dello Stato [Special Court for the Defence of the State]. On 17 June 1932 republican and anarchist were shot there Domenico Bovone and the anarchist Angelo Sbardellottobeing considered guilty of planning attempts on the lives of Mussolini. Between 11 October 1943 and 3 June 1944, during the period of theGerman occupation of Rome, there were executed, by order of the Germanic Military War Tribunal. Among them, Don Domenico Morosini, star of Rossellini's film Roma città aperta, was killed on 3 April.

Between 1944 and 1945 Pietro Caruso and Pietro Koch were also shot there, sentenced to death by theHigh Court of Justice for sanctions against fascism. A monument, placed at the entrance in 1967, commemorates the names of patriots killed during the war.

After the war, Fort Bravetta was used by the Army as an ammunition depot. Decommissioned by the military, it passed into the hands of the Public Property Department and, since 2009, has been owned by the Town Council of Rome , which has destined it for collective memory. On 9 September 2009, the Mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno inaugurated the 'Martyrs' Park' here, a new ten-hectare municipal garden open to the public, consecrated to the victims of Nazi-Fascism. During the ceremony, an olive tree symbolising peace was planted, donated by the Jewish National Fund and coming from Jerusalem.

On the occasion of the reopening to the public in June 2011, it was proposed to establish a 'Museum of Remembrance' in the fort's buildings. The area is part of the Valle dei Casali Nature Reserve between Via Aurelia and Via Portuense.
