The cultural centre was opened in April 2014 at the behest of the administration. The exhibition is divided into four thematic areas: the Earth Room (geology), the Origins Room (20th century history), the Rural World and the South African War Memorial.

Castiglione dei Pepoli was liberated on 27 September 1944 by American soldiers of the 91st Reconnaissance Squadron, attached to the 34th American Division, immediately followed by South African infantrymen of the Imperial Horse/Kimberly regiment. From that date until April 1945, Castiglione became their headquarters and resting place. The Germans had abandoned the country two days earlier.

The South African War Memorial exhibits war relics from the battlefields and photographs from the period, and also displays some personal items of the then South African soldier Colin Eglin, who after the war became an anti-apartheid politician and participated in Nelson Mandela's government with his party.

A visit to the Centre is rounded off by the Origins Room, which is dedicated to human settlement in the area from the Middle Ages to the present day, and the Rural World Room, which is dedicated to traditional work in the Apennines and preserves objects used daily by the inhabitants. Finally, the Earth Room is interesting, where you can see mineralogical and palaeontological (fossil) finds discovered in the area.
