The South African war cemetery hosts the bodies of 503 soldiers who fell during operations on the Gothic Line.

The area for the burials was chosen in November 1944 by a British soldier, attached with his unit to the 6th South African Armoured Division. The cemetery faces north towards the neighbouring mountains, where South African soldiers fought fierce battles: Mount Catarelto, Mount Stanco and Mount Sole.

The first burials of soldiers date back to November 1944. Today, the cemetery holds the remains of 502 fallen soldiers, including 401 South Africans, 99 British and 2 Indians.

The project was designed by architect Louis De Soissons.

Relatives of the deceased often visit the cemetery, and official commemoration ceremonies are organised on a regular basis.
