The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) opened the end of 2023 its new visitor centre at the American Cemetery in Margraten. It is ABMC's 10th visitor centre in the world.

"This special visitor centre is not just beautiful or historic - it is a reminder to the Dutch and American people, and humanity, that mankind has never conceived of anything more powerful than a free people willing to fight for freedom," stated Charles K. Djou, secretary of ABMC.

Visitors can watch exhibitions and a new film. They tell about the US soldiers who fought and died in Europe and their hardships, challenges and triumphs.

The American Cemetery in Margraten is the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands in memory of those who lost their lives in World War II. The servicemen honoured at the cemetery were involved in operations in the Netherlands and also fought on German soil.

More than 8,000 soldiers are buried in the cemetery and about 1,700 are commemorated on the Walls of the Missing.
