During the Battle of Arnhem, the 1st Border Regiment was one of the few regiments that could achieve its original objective of defending the western side of the British line.

The 1st Border Regiment landed on September 17th and defended landing zone X near Wolfheze until the second wave of gliders had landed. After that, the regiment was responsible for defending the western border of the perimeter. This border ran from the Van Lennepweg all the way to the high grounds of the Westerbouwing close to the Rhine river and was over two kilometers long. There weren’t soldiers at everymeter of the line, but all open fields were defended from sheltered positions.

On this side of the road, soldiers of No. 15 and No. 16 Platoon of C Company were dug in, waiting for the moment at which they would have to repel an enemy attack.
