Itinéraire

Many imposing buildings in the Vaals region were used for military purposes during the Second World War. Sometimes this entailed billeting troops or treating the wounded. Vaalsbroek Castle in the hamlet of Raren, inhabited by a very elderly German, was given a special function during the war years.

Dutch, German and Allied officers successively occupied the castle. Immediately after the liberation of Raren on 13 September 1944, the inhabitants of the area took their own revenge on the German occupant and caused extensive damage to the beautiful castle.
