Joris Nieuwint is a battlefield guide for the Operation Market Garden area. His primary focus is on the Allied operations from September 17th, 1944 onwards. Having lived in the Market Garden area for 25 years, he has been studying the events for nearly as long. He has a deep understanding of the history and a passion for sharing the stories of the men who are no longer with us.

My interest in the battlefields goes back as long as I can remember. Even in elementary school, I was reading books about World War II and was copying passages from books to a notebook which I recently re-discovered. Then in the early 1990s, I moved to Arnhem, and suddenly I was living on top of the battlefields. This change of location made my interest stronger but also gave it focus; Operation Market Garden became my thing.

At Arnhem, I also went from being a spectator at commemorations to being a participant. In 2006 I bought a WWII Dodge and became involved in a living history group. That step solidified my interest in the battlefields because now I owned part of that unique heritage.

In 2012 I started guiding small groups around the battlefields of Arnhem, Nijmegen, and Eindhoven and I have enjoyed every minute. Since 2018 I also guide larger groups on tours across Europe.

What I very much enjoy about being a guide is sharing my passion for war history, telling the stories of sacrifice and heroism, making sure that they are not forgotten.

The thing that keeps pulling me to battlefields is the incredible sensation of standing on a spot where history happened. To talk about these locations to a group or an individual and then see them realize the significance of where they are standing, seeing it dawn on their faces is extremely special.
